What to Take & Why, My COVID 19 Strategy

This is simply one person’s opinion.
This is my personal preference and while I do not claim to be an expert, it works for me. This information is shared to help your make your own decisions, be it, for times like these or as a lifestyle. As usual, you should discuss these decisions with a medical professional and do your own research.

Like most of us, I have been watching, reading and listening to learn how we can protect ourselves. The only “potential” treatments you read and hear about are pharmaceuticals. Very little, if any, information is out there regarding natural treatments like Vitamins, Herbs and Minerals. Why that is and entirely separate topic worth discussing but today, let’s just talk about what to take and why.

The debate over the malaria drug Hydroxychloroquine is rife with special interests so I’m looking at the actual reports from the field and those reports look extremely promising. Not only are physicians prescribing it for patients with COVID 19, many are taking it themselves as a defense against COVID 19. Most of us can’t get a hydroxychloroquine prescription without first having tested positive for the virus. Even if we could get it, do we all want to take a pharmaceutical for months or maybe a year or more, just in case?

Is there a natural alternative to Hydroxychloroquine? To answer that, one needs to first understand what hydroxychloroquine does and find a vitamin herb or mineral that does the same or similar.  Hydroxychloroquine is a “Zinc ionophore”. In the most basic of terms, that means, it helps the cells retain Zinc or actually absorb more Zinc. Zinc has been shown, in studies, to block the replication of viruses in those cells. That action is what researchers are looking at as a treatment against COVID 19 and as a prophylactic to protect against getting the virus.

One natural Zinc ionophore is EGCG (epigallocatechin-3-gallate) a catechin found in Green Tea. Unfortunately, a cup or two of green tea will not do the trick and even if one drank tea all day, the absorption rate of the EGCG into the system may not be good enough to make a difference. Green Tea Extract is a more efficient way to get EGCG but, again, absorption is less than perfect. I choose “tigovit” Green Tea Complex, out of Germany. Tigovit combines Bioperine (pepper) and Ester C (Vitamin C) with the extract making the EGCG in tigovit up to 50 times more bioavailable (absorbed) than other extracts. Tigovit is also decaffeinated so I don’t have to be zipped up, all day, just to get sufficient amounts of EGCG into my system. Keep you EGCG intake below 800 mg, to be safe.

A second natural Zinc ionophore is Quercetin and I want to take two Zinc ionophores. According to Wikipedia, “Quercetin is a plant flavonol from the flavonoid group of polyphenols. It is found in many fruits, vegetables, leaves, seeds, and grains; red onions and kale are common foods containing appreciable amounts of Quercetin.” But, like EGCG in green tea, can I consume enough to get the Quercetin I need? Can’t answer that question accurately so combining Quercetin with tigosol’s bioavailable EGCG is the central focus of my strategy.  I searched Amazon for a Quercetin product with good reviews at a reasonable price. I choose Amazing Formulas – Quercetin 500 Mg capsules.

Now I have two natural Zinc ionophore’s, but I may also need some Zinc. According to Wikipedia ,“ Zinc is found in oysters, meat, beans, and nuts”. However….”Zinc deficiency may affect up to 2 billion people worldwide.” I have no intention of being deficient, at a time like this, so I found, on Amazon, a reasonably priced Zinc product with good reviews. And the winner is!  Good State – Ionic Liquid Zinc Ultra Concentrate.

I already take turmeric curcumin, for its many benefits, for more than 5 years and together with tigovit for 2 years. A recent study indicated Turmeric Curcumin combined with green tea extract enhanced the absorption of the EGCG. That’s a win, win for sure. At 73, I’m doing well and have not had a cold or flu for the 2 years I was taking both. I used to take the Tumeric capsules with the pepper in them but changed to liquid caps which are reported to be even more bioavailable. I like NovaSOL Turmeric Curcumin Softgels from A1 Vitality

let us not forget the gut. The gut is so important, I take Tigosol-Bacillus Subtillus Probiotic with vitamin D3 and EGCG. Studies indicate Bacillus Subtilis (a probiotic) may neutralize bad gut bacteria that could lower one’s resistance. The additional EGCG is a plus and vitamin D3 is a must have for times like these.  BTW tigosol does wonders for my, let’s call it, my bathroom experience.

The Bottom Line, for me in times like these.

tigovit Green Tea Complex, 1 to 3 times a day with

NovaSOL Turmeric Curcumin Softgels from A1 Vitality

Amazing Formulas – Quercetin, 1 to 2 times a day.

Good State – Ionic Liquid Zinc Ultra Concentrate, once a day. Don’t overdo it, it takes a lot but one can overdose on Zinc.

Tigosol-Bacillus Subtilis Probiotic with vitamin D3 and EGCG, once a day.

Optional but not really:
Vitamin B12 capsules or a Multi Vitamin containing B12, once a day.

Greg and Dog Hugo Scale The Dunes at Sleeping Bear Dunes in Michigan.

If you ever have the pleasure of visiting these dunes, in Sleeping Bear Dunes National Park, I would not recommend climbing down to the beach unless your are very fit. Getting down this steep sand dune is difficult enough but coming up that moving wall of sand is a major task. It’s three steps up and slide two steps down. Signs are prominently posted warning the dangers of going down and the expense of having to be rescued.
We met Greg, a fellow Boomer, after watching him come up, with the aid of Hugo, his brothers Weimaraner.

Getboomersfit Never leave the playgroundWe had the pleasure to meet Stephen Jepson  (77 years old ) and saw his presentation at a conference about functioning aging in Orlando.  His motto is “Never leave the Playground”. Learning new skills, using hands and feet promotes cognition and brain function. It also enriches our lives and gives us an idea of how much more we can achieve if we try.
It doesn’t have to be perfect. The process of learning brings the benefits.  We were lucky to get a picture taken together with Stephen.
Katja decided to try it out his philosophy at the next campground stop at Ochlockonee River State park.

Kenny and Annie “Blessed” At Yellowstone National Park!

While on our Summer 2017 Tour of the USA, we visited Yellowstone National Park and met some inspirational Baby Boomers along the way. Among them was Kenny Rodgers, a retired Las Vegas Police officer. Kenny and Annie hike, bike, run and do resistance training together. They believe they are blessed to be able to visit and fully enjoy places like Yellowstone.

Osteoarthritis Causes and Prevention

This audio interview is with the scientist who lead a study that found the increase in Osteoarthritis is not due to living longer or body weight, as as the medical world currently believes. It is due to our lack of activity.
The study also concluded, Osteoarthritis can be preventable.
This news may be too late for some boomers but others could benefit by making a simple lifestyle change.
All of us could share the information with our children and grandchildren to help save them from this painful malady.

Take It Easy

The Eagles / Jackson Browne tune, “Take It Easy” is excellent advice for anyone but even more so for us boomers. In this video, our friend, Alan explains how he acquired a double groin injury and sciatica from not taking it easy.

Alan was a competitive skier and cyclist who still has the skills and drive to compete with people a fraction of his age. The problem is, our friend has allowed his general fitness and flexibility to decline and he has never really been one to stretch regularly. That is a prescription for injury.

Even the youngest Boomers need to keep in mind; one can’t take part in sports or jump into an exercise program full steam ahead. Take it easy in the beginning, warming up and regular stretching is more important than ever. Stay fit and flexible and you will be surprised what you can do!

Retired Twice and Still Active

Just before heading down from our meager 3 mile hike on the Colorado Trail to Harvard Lakes, we met another 500 miler on his 16th day on the trail. Eugene, an Air Force Colonel who, after retiring from the service, became a High School Science Teacher.  He is retired again but no less active.

Eugene’s trek, from Denver to Durango, is just about 500 miles. We had the pleasure of hiking and talking with him for a while. We enjoyed a lively and enlightening conversation. Like many of the other fit Boomers we met on our CO journey, Eugene has been active almost as long as he can remember. But, don’t be discouraged, it is never too late and we will show you many examples of Boomers who have gotten better with age.

Meanwhile enjoy our short interview, on the trail with Eugene.

Mother and Daughter Take A 500 Mile Walk

Sue and, daughter, Michelle are hiking the Colorado trail from Littleton to Durango, approximately 500 miles of up and down. Typically it takes 5 or 6 weeks for hikers to complete the hike and these two are right on schedule, no small accomplishment.
Katja and I spoke with Michelle and Sue on the trail near “Harvard Lakes”. While we were on a day hike, the ladies were 16 days into their trek.
Enjoy the video.

Boomers Plan Adventure Run!

Johnathon and Carl, two Colorado Boomers, are on the “Midland Trail” in Buena Vista CO planning an annual adventure run. Colorado boasts one of the longest life expectancies in the Nation and with many boomers, like these two, choosing to live here it is easy to see why.
The Midland Hill in Buena Vista Colorado begins on a bridge over the Arkansas River. It has several hiking, running and mountain bike trails. From easy to advanced, something for everyone. Hikers, who want a real challenge, should hike or run to the Midland peak, approx. 1500 feet in about 2 miles.

Myth#1 To be old is to be sick

getboomersfit-com_louWhile the prevalence of chronic diseases increases with advancing age, a large number of mature adults are healthy, robust and without any significant functional limitations. Even in advanced old age, there are individuals that attain incredible heights of athleticism and fitness.
